One of the few sources of excitement out on the west end of the Minneapolis Sub are the very sporadic autorack extras. Word through the interwebs this day had one such extra on its way with a BNSF leader and FXE trailing. It was a nice fall day so I headed out to see if I could intercept the train. Leapfrogging crossings I carefully made my way east.
When I got to Cylon I discovered the extra stopped. My spirits rose for a moment thinking they must have stopped to change up the power, FXE leader? My hopes were dashed once I got a closer look. The trailing unit was still tied onto the train with the lead unit running around the wye. They would run nose to nose the rest of the trip to the autoport. Ugh.
I shot it a few times anyway since I needed to go back to town. Without ditch lights they set no speed records at 20 mph. There must have been some reason the FXE could not lead at all. Turning the 4986 would allow it run short hood forward back to back with the FXE once the crew was rested to go east. In the wee hours the crew would return east (contrary to the past practice for these extras). Without any cars released yet at the autoport they would go east with a handful of loaded used tie gondolas. October 28, 2022.
Cylon Raider (of Battlestar Galactica fame) building, somewhere in Zagreb, Croatia. That's my only roll of Kodachrome, taken sometime in late August 2010.
Taken with Pentax P5 film camera, smc Pentax-M 50mm F1.7 lens, on an expired roll of Kodak Kodachrome 64 film. Developed in one of the last batches in Dwayne's Photo lab in Parsons, Kansas, USA. Scanned with Plustek OpticFilm 8100 dedicated film scanner using VueScan x64 9.5.

L517 died near Cylon this morning due to an air issue with one of their cars. The L506 crew came out of New Brighton, and subsequently set the B/O car out at Cylon. Unfortunately the sky was mostly covered with cirrus garbage for much of the morning. The SD40-2W that made a couple of trips on this train had also been replaced by a sad looking H2 Dash 9.
A Heavy Raider is a Cylon dual purpose attack and transport spacecraft, analogous to the Colonial's Raptor vehicle. It is nicknamed a "turkey" by the surviving Colonial Fleet's military units (TRS: "Maelstrom"). (Battlestar Wiki)
Well, I think I might be. Apparently they are android type things from Battlestar Galactica, and we had to pretend to be one. The group wants "pictures of you that don't look anything like you". I'm not sure you can't tell it's me, but I've certainly had some work done!
I've referred to the engineering vagaries of the Minnepolis Sub before. This may be my favorite picture for illustrating the "primative" nature of the old stretch between Cylon and New Richmond. When the original Wisconsin Central built their extension to the Twin Cities they did so in a hurry to get the line open, as many "first draft" routes were constructed at the time. Major reconstructions to the west and the east straighted a lot of curves, filled the dips and lowered the crests, not so here. This is what I think of as no-extra-shovelful construction. From New Richmond to Cylon the Minneapolis Sub follows the Willow River although that stream is not large enough to have carved a broad valley and instead meanders between ridges. The railroad has to intersect a number of these ridges. Back in the '406 days stacks can be seen climbing up the ridge in the background while the head end has crested and is already on the way down. It wouldn't have taken much earth-moving to substantially straighten this line but the perennially frugal Soo made do with this twisty mainline for many years. Unfortunately, the trees between the road and the tracks have grown up substantially over the last 15 years obscuring this overview. March 8, 2003.
Hot on the heels of the 2004 Battlestar Galactica TV series, here is my minifig scale Cylon Raider. Originally suggested to me by Brickvault, it took me about 3 weeks to design. It is the strongest (VERY swooshable) model I have ever created and is very accurate to the shape and proportions of the Mk II Raider.
The ship is 32.5cm long and 20cm wide and is made of 656 pieces (including my signature angled stand). It is also very accurately scaled to the Colonial Viper created by Flying Waffle which you can find on Brickvault's webstore.
Instructions are available from my rebrickable page at: bit.ly/385W5Ls

My round two entry for the MocOlympics on MOCpages. My topic was Battlestar Galactica and lots of homework was needed to know what to do for this. I didn't want to just build a Colonial Viper since that's been done well by many, many builders so I built a Landram/Snowram and a last minute Cylon Raider. Boxey and Muffit were thrown in just before picture taking to spice things up a bit.
By your command.....
